When you invite a landscaping company onto your property, it helps you to know who stands behind the business. At By The Blade, that person is Patrick Vogt. Patrick is our owner and operator, but his connection to lawn care and landscaping started long before By The Blade became the company it is today.
Patrick began mowing lawns in his Parkville neighborhood as a teenager. After graduating from Park Hill High School in 1998, he continued building that work into a business. More than 25 years later, Patrick remains involved as By The Blade has grown from neighborhood lawn care into landscaping and complete outdoor living.

Who Is Patrick Vogt?
Patrick’s story with By The Blade starts in the yard. He was not introduced to the outdoor industry from behind a desk. His early experience came from mowing lawns for people in his own community and learning what it meant to provide a service homeowners could depend on.
That early work eventually became By The Blade. Patrick is now the company’s owner and operator and carries the title Chief Ambassador of Outdoor Living. The title reflects how much the business has grown, but lawn care and landscaping remain at the heart of the company he started.
How Did By The Blade Get Its Start?
The beginning was simple. Patrick started mowing neighborhood lawns as a teenager and discovered an opportunity to build something larger. After high school, he continued developing the business instead of leaving that early work behind.
Over time, homeowners began trusting By The Blade with more of their properties. The company expanded beyond mowing into landscaping and other outdoor services. That growth has allowed Patrick and our team to look at a yard as more than grass that needs to be cut.
How Has Patrick Grown the Company?
One part of By The Blade’s history came in 2009 when Patrick purchased Rainbow Irrigation. That move expanded the company’s ability to address irrigation alongside lawn and landscaping work. It also supported a broader approach to caring for residential properties.
By The Blade later served as an outdoor landscape design provider for the Kansas City Symphony Showhouse from 2012 through 2016. Today, our services extend into landscaping, irrigation, outdoor lighting, pools, outdoor kitchens, fire features, decks, and other outdoor living projects.
What Does Premium Landscaping Mean to Us?
Premium landscaping should begin with the property and the people who live there. We do not think it means adding expensive features simply for the sake of adding them. A project should have a purpose and make sense for how you want to use your home.
For one Leawood homeowner, that may mean updating planting areas and improving the appearance around the house. Another family may be thinking about a patio, outdoor kitchen, lighting, or pool. We want to understand what you want from the property before deciding what belongs in the plan.
Why Does Patrick’s Hands-On Beginning Matter?
There is value in understanding where a company owner learned the business. Patrick’s first experience came from doing outdoor work himself. From those early mowing jobs, he watched By The Blade grow as the company took on broader lawn, landscaping, irrigation, and outdoor projects.
That history gives Patrick a long view of the business. The projects may be larger today, but homeowners still want many of the same things. They want people to listen, respect their property, explain the work clearly, and deliver something they can enjoy once the crews leave.
Why Do We Start by Listening?
A beautiful yard can mean very different things to different homeowners. Some people want more room to entertain. Others want planting areas that better fit the home. You may be thinking about replacing an outdoor area that no longer works well for your family.
We would rather hear those thoughts before deciding what your property needs. Tell us what bothers you about the current space. Tell us what you enjoy about it too. Those conversations give our team a clearer idea of what should stay, what might change, and where the project should go.
Why Does the Entire Property Matter?
Landscaping does not exist by itself. A planting bed sits next to the lawn. Trees influence shade. Irrigation affects how different areas receive water. Patios and walkways affect movement, while lighting changes how the property can be used after sunset.
That is why we like to understand the larger property even when the project focuses on one area. You may not need to change everything. In fact, we would rather identify what deserves attention than make a project larger without a good reason.
How Does Design Fit Into Premium Landscaping?
Design gives us an opportunity to think through a project before work begins. We can consider the home, existing outdoor areas, how people move through the property, and what the homeowner wants to accomplish. Those details can help shape a plan that feels connected to the house.
Our website describes the By The Blade design team as bringing hands-on industry experience to outdoor projects. We believe the practical side of a plan matters. The finished project needs to work on the actual property and for the people who will live with it every day.
What If Landscaping Is Only Part of Your Plan?
Many homeowners eventually want more from their backyard than traditional planting areas. You may picture a place for cooking outside, sitting around a fire, enjoying a pool, or spending evenings with friends and family. Those ideas can affect how the rest of the property should be planned.
By The Blade works across several parts of outdoor living, including landscaping, irrigation, lighting, pools, outdoor kitchens, fire features, and other gathering spaces. Having those conversations together can help us understand how one area may connect with another.
Why Does Outdoor Lighting Deserve Attention?
A project completed by a Leawood landscaping company can look very different once the sun goes down. Lighting may help define walkways, gathering spaces, architectural features, or parts of the landscaping you want to enjoy in the evening. It can also become part of how people move through the property after dark.
Because outdoor lighting is part of our work, it can be discussed alongside the landscaping instead of being treated as an unrelated thought later. Not every project needs the same lighting. We want to think about where you actually spend time and what areas matter once daylight fades.
What Happens After a Landscaping Project Is Complete?
Landscaping continues changing after installation. Plants grow, grass needs care, seasons change, and outdoor areas continue being used. We think it is worth considering that future care while planning the property instead of thinking only about how everything looks on completion day.
By The Blade continues to provide lawn care and landscape maintenance in addition to design and outdoor construction. That gives homeowners the option to keep working with our team after a larger project when ongoing property care is something they need.
What Does More Than 25 Years of History Mean?
More than 25 years in business gives By The Blade a story homeowners can examine. They can see where Patrick Vogt started, how the company developed, and how its services expanded. That history is more meaningful to us than simply calling ourselves experienced.
It also gives us a responsibility to keep earning a homeowner’s confidence. Longevity does not mean we should expect someone to hire us without asking questions. We want you to understand what we are recommending, why it makes sense for your property, and what you can expect from the work.
Is Patrick Still Part of By The Blade Today?
Yes. Patrick’s history is not simply an origin story from decades ago. He remains the owner and operator of By The Blade. He has continued with the company as it grew from the lawn-mowing work he started as a teenager into the outdoor living business homeowners know today.
That continuity matters to us. There is still a direct connection between the person who started By The Blade and the company serving homeowners now. Patrick’s role gives our team a clear history and a consistent idea of what the company is here to do.
Why Choose Patrick Vogt and By The Blade in Leawood?
We believe homeowners should know the people and history behind a landscaping company before making their decision. Patrick brings more than 25 years of company history that started with hands-on lawn work. By The Blade now brings that background into landscaping and complete outdoor living projects for homeowners throughout the Kansas City area.
If you are considering landscaping for your Leawood home, start by telling us about the property. Tell us what works, what does not, and what you would like to enjoy outside that you cannot enjoy today. Patrick and the By The Blade team can take it from there and talk with you about what makes sense for your home.
