Landscaping Investment

When people think about renovating their home they usually think of new kitchen cabinets or flooring. But one of the most important investments you can make is landscaping. A landscaping project can cost anywhere from $5,000 to over $100,000 and while that may seem high, homeowners should keep in mind that investing in professional landscaping will greatly add to the value of their home. A general rule of thumb is to spend 10% of your home’s value on landscaping.

Once you have a project completed, obviously you don’t want to lose it due to lack of care and maintenance. Every lawn, garden, and grounds project needs someone with experience and knowledge to be responsible for its care, but what every living plant needs most is water.

Here are some tips to make sure your landscaping investment is protected:

Install an irrigation system. Don’t rely on rain because it’s not reliable! An irrigation system with a timer won’t forget to water the lawn when you’re on vacation or busy with other responsibilities. We’ve received calls from unhappy homeowners who woke up one day, walked outside, and saw their lawn was dead. What happened? They let it go.

Make sure your irrigation system is smart. You can add a sensor so if it does rain, your system will take a break. You don’t want to waste water, and you don’t want to over-water.

When using a sprinkler system, water between 4:00 and 10:00 a.m. Early to mid-morning watering gives the lawn a chance to dry before evening which can help to protect against pests and disease.

Of course, always make sure you are in accordance with any restrictions on watering.

Test your soil now and then to make sure everything is as it should be. Some homeowners will see brown grass, assume it needs more water, and then soak it with enough water to float a cruise ship. The problem could be something not related to watering at all.
